Koenig

Founded in 1948, the house in Sarre-Union (67) is today one of the oldest organ factories in Alsace. During the second half of the 20th century, the manufacture underwent a real revolution. The Manufacture was founded by Jean-Georges Koenig (1920-1992), who first worked as an apprentice at Roethinger. In 1945 he joined forces with Mrs. Vondrasek's widow to take over the Saar-Union company, which had been founded in 1930 by Henri Vondrasek at the end of his partnership with Eugène Eberhard (Diemeringen). Jean- Georges Koenig obtained his master's degree in 1948, and set up his own business. From that date, thanks to the young Michel Chapuis, then professor at the Strasbourg Conservatory, he turned towards a return to the old organ and particularly to the French Classical Organ. The reconstruction of the organ of the church of St Georges de Sarre-Union, carried out according to the directives of Dom Bédos, was the starting point of the fame of the House. As a result of this reconstruction, the company built almost exclusively organs with suspended action. In 1968, his son Yves Koenig (* 1950) joined the company and took over it in 1983. In 2008, Julien Marchal (* 1990) joined the company as an apprentice. In 2016, he took over the management of the company and was awarded the Alsatian Craftsmanship Prize in October 2018, to eventually succeed Yves Koenig in 2020.
